Indonesia’s Arabica Coffee
Aditi Ghosh
Indonesia’s arabica coffee is regarded as the best arabica coffee in the world. The Bajawa coffee from this region (Ngada district) is among one of the finest coffee. A dedicated tea drinker like me also indulging in the morning cup of coffee here. Its aroma is just irresistible. Another interesting thing is local weaves. Each district uses different patterns influenced by local rituals and culture. They present this to their guest as a welcome gesture.
Some tribes have here ‘Lopo’ house which is made from Bamboo and traditional material. A part of it (ground floor) is used by men for gathering and women are only allowed to come here to serve drink/food. But the other part ( upper floor) is ‘womme’ which is used by women for preparing and keeping food.
This time I missed visiting ‘Flores’ to see the famous Komodo dragon. Another island which has evoked my inquisitiveness is ‘Sumba’. Their traditional culture centres on the Marapu belief. Marapu is focused on creating harmonious relationships between humans and ancestral spirits, the Ina Ama. My colleague mentioned that human sacrifice for ritual purposes is still a reality there.
The time has come to say goodbye to this island (leaving tomorrow) but these memories will remain with me forever.
